What is thinset mortar?

Thinset mortar is a cement-based adhesive applied as a thin layer between tile and the substrate (drywall, concrete, cement board, or backerboard). Unlike traditional thick-bed mortar, thinset creates a strong, flexible bond and dries quickly, making it the standard choice for most residential and commercial tile work in Tampa and beyond.

The two main types are modified and unmodified thinset. Modified thinset contains additives, typically latex, that improve flexibility and water resistance, making it suitable for areas prone to movement or moisture like bathrooms, showers, and pools. Unmodified thinset, made from cement and sand alone, works well for interior walls and dry areas. Contractors select between them based on substrate type, tile composition, and environmental conditions.

Thinset application requires proper trowel technique to create consistent ridges that ensure full tile coverage and prevent hollow spots.
