What is a waterproofing membrane?

A sheet or liquid barrier material applied to surfaces before tile installation in wet areas to stop water from penetrating into the substrate and underlying framing.

A waterproofing membrane is a protective layer, typically made from rubber, PVC, or polyethylene sheets, or applied as a liquid coating, installed beneath tile in moisture-prone spaces like shower enclosures, steam rooms, and wet walls. The membrane creates a continuous barrier that redirects water back toward drains instead of allowing it to seep into the substrate, framing, and insulation behind the tile.

Florida building code requires waterproofing membranes in all shower installations and wet areas. The code mandates this protection because water that escapes behind tile quickly causes structural rot, mold growth, and costly damage to studs, subfloors, and building materials. Without a membrane, even small cracks or grout failures allow water penetration that goes unnoticed until serious decay develops.

Membranes come in two forms: sheet membranes (pre-made rolls) and liquid membranes (brushed or sprayed on-site). Sheet membranes like KERDI or Schluter systems are common in tile work and require careful sealing at seams and penetrations. Liquid membranes, often acrylic or urethane-based, fill voids and cure into a monolithic waterproof layer. Both types must be installed before tile and mortar, with proper slope to drainage points. Installers who work with bathroom and shower tile understand that correct membrane placement is as critical as the tile itself to long-term performance.
